I'm new to the world of OrangePi. But I like it due to its broad range of available devices. Although I do find the "mostly per-unit S&H" a bit of a scam. I got started in the SBC world due to the CHIP and more importantly the PocketCHIP. You can read about the devices on the NTC website. It appears that NTC went out of business late last year. But their hardware is opensource... so it could live on...

I'm hoping someone official from OrangePi will read this post and maybe be interested in taking the open source files provided in the NTC GitHub account and want to add it to the OrangePi offerings, even if modified. Now if your looking, I'm not talking about the ChipPRO, which as far as I can tell isn't much different from the zero, other than in physical form factor. The things that the CHIP had going for it that I have not seen in the variety of other SBCs I've looked at is LCD driver output, resistive-touch input and built in battery charger. These made it possible to build a handheld computer (the PocketCHIP) with very little additional hardware: physical chasis, keyboard & controller (TWI interfaced), display panel, battery and handful of discrete components.

I could go on quite a bit about the hardware but I think most everything can be read at those links.... at least as long as the sites stay up. Since the majority of OrangePi's are AllWinner powered I thought you guys could do something with the CHIP concept, which also used an AllWinner (R8).

The CPU used in the CHIP is quite old, that is why it was so cheap. Orange PI boards use newer Allwinner CPUs.  In general the various Orange PI boards are very similar to the CHIP offering. I actually believe Orange PI was selling their boards before CHIP was founded.

The software for chip is based on sunxi Linux. Orange PI board use the same sunxi code.
Check out https://www.armbian.com/

Give one a try. They are cheap to buy and your knowledge from the CHIP will apply.

Thanks for the info. I get all that. I have a pair of zeros I'm toying with building into a cluster housed in a small tower PC case and will probably use to replace the CHIPs in my clocks. It would be nice if vendors put feature matrices on their sites but I have not seen such on the OrangePi site. I haven't visited every model they have to offer (yet). So perhaps you are more familiar with their line and can point me to a model with LCD outputs (not HDMI, composite, ...), resistive-touch input and battery charger?  Thanks for any help.

Hi! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing months of hard work due to no back up. Do you have any solutions to protect against hackers?        https://timesaverholdings.com/
