I'm using an Orange Pi One which I'm setting up to use a swap file on  a USB disk.  As the USB access is going to slow down the memory caching quite a bit I was wondering if anyone knows how to get zswap or zram installed.  I'm using Ubuntu Mate.

You need a kernel compiled with it enabled. On the 3.4-kernel it can be found in staging-drivers, on the mainline-kernel it's no longer in staging.

Thanks - I'll have to dive into the murky waters of kernel  compilation.   It the linux development  kit from the opi download section I need  (never compiled the kernel before )?

Your best bet would read up on the Armbian site, http://www.armbian.com/, for help with compiling kernels for the OPis and a number of other Allwinner SOC based devices.
Currently playing around with OPis, RPis and CHIPs.
