By 'crap u-boot' do you mean the one included in the debian server image for OPI+ ?

If I remember correctly only the latest lubuntu (0.9) and the images from @loboris have u-boot compiled with script.bin support.
The sources are the same it depends on how it is compiled.
You need to replace (rewrite) u-boot with a "good one".

I am very rusty in programming, but this is one of the reasons I bought a few Pi's after all, to start programming again and to have some fun. I'm not sure how much I can contribute with at the moment, but I will pick up the pace. Count me in.

Steven, any news on the OPi PC? As I've mentioned before in this thread, I am interested in experimenting with a small cluster, and the OPi PC seems the best choice for that. Also as individual headless servers they will probably be very interesting, as most of the software issues we still have with the H3 boards would probably not apply to this application. In summary, I do want my OPi2 to work properly (cpufreq, hardware acceleration, etc), but I see many uses for the OPi PC even at the current state.

We have tested Orange Pi PC almost. We will release Orange Pi PC with mali400mp2 support. We first will update firmware of OPI Plus and OPI2.

I have some experience with u-boot. Once I get my OPi PC (supposed to be shipped) I will get started.
