Just for the sake of it, try zeroing the card and  reflash the image and see. I don't think there is anything wrong with the images as such.

OK, remind me, how do we go about "Zeroing" a card out (and I'm kind of slow)

Googled this up to be done via a Linux system.
It goes something like:  $ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdd bs=8192

Easy way I've found is use "Erase" found on the Pmagic live CD.
Uses the same command as above, but, has a GUI to help avoid mistakes.

I can't get any of the openelec images to boot from any of my 8GB sdcards, either pre-built or compiled by me, but they all boot without any problems from any of my 32GB sdcards. Using dd, using win32imager, using rufus, zeroing the card before... always the same result.
I don't know why because the 8GB sdcards don't seem to have any issues (tested and retested without errors).

Just posting my experience. Hope it helps.

I can say it is possible on a 8GB card. I've done it with earlier versions, on this card, which is a Class10 Sandisk.
I would say this was the most likely key to success. But again, after a "Full Wipe - Zeroing the SD card out", I apply the 078757 image (that also includes SDformating), and it failes to launch. The "Red Led" is on, the "Lan is lite" and Zip Nada Zilch.
As this SD card was cleanly cleaned, formated and knowing that all other prior images have worked with it before, I conclide, it's the image, and not the SD cards fault.
I'm running the Pi to a 1080p monitor via HDMI. With the Red LED active, I feel the image should be loaded and operating, so where do we go from here???I even tried swapping in the 1080p60 script.bin file and it's still fails.
I'm going back to an earlier image, if it works, that too convinces me it's the image.

Can you take the ouput from the serial port during boot from 8GB card? Maybe it would show us the reason.

I'll give it a go once my wife let's me disconnect the OPi from the TV and boot it with one of the 8GB sdcards. (It's your fault for making this thing run this good)
From what I remember, it fails while loading the kernel.

Sorry can't do that, 1) no Cable yet. 2) I'm not that smooth or swift yet.
Image 401fb6 loads and runs, I'll try 2566e2 next. 1fb6 loads streight from the Full Wipe.
now 2566e2 loads and works, that just leaves 78757 to re-test.

Well, I don't know why. But, after several, full erase & rewrite cycles, of the same (8gb Sandisk) card I've been using, finally loaded the 78757 image, and is running normally again.
I'm not certain nor, really concerned with the how or why anymore, just glad I don't need to buy a new sd card yet, and I've got both OPi-PC's the same version. So, I should be able to get back to something I'm getting good at & prefer, sorting through m3u file lists, for active TV channel's.
