thank you for assistance just waiting on sellers return slip to send back today...

Such a shame about lack of community support but that is an issue thats killing the device and should have check before buying as seems theres a LOT of complaits about it on the internet...

Certainly is the only reason why I will leave the orange pi infavour of the Raspberry pi (which we already have three of )  and will now prompt me to adbvise others to ignore the Orange Pi's completely and choose the Raspberries instead...

Community support for Allwinner boards (a10,a20,H3) is not that bad, you just fail to find them:

http://forum.armbian.com/index.php/forum/2-debian-ubuntu
https://linux-sunxi.org/Main_Page

I bet this is doable on any Orangepi board without knowing much about Octopi except peeking here https://github.com/guysoft/OctoPi

Regarding wifi dongles. Yes, Rpi kernel have more of them out of the box but any driver can be added or ported. Why we haven't already done that? Because community is smaller. In many cases, you need to add driver on your own or better, use a hardware which is 100% supported. This is general Linux problem, unrelated to Rpi or any other fruit.

While wifi is trivial to solve, LCD display or camera can be more problematic in this project.

wifi is a huge issue and as is the screen resolution.... both issues I don't have witgh any of the Raspberrys...(we have zero, pi2 and pi3)   if those could have been over come then I would have certainly looked further into using the newer Oranges.. But even before posting I had looked on the forums you had mentioned and found the support tonfix those issues had been some what lacking!!!

Wifi chips, which are on boards, works just fine. Also on upcoming kernel 4.6, of course there will be always an selection of unsupported wifi chips.

What is wrong with screen resolution? Supported:

Oranges are not perfect, but in certain cases are better / perfect choice. This one (Octopi) is not theirs. Same logic goes for other boards.

If I use my tv as screen task bar etc is missing and as to wifi well just as shame they are not as simply as raspberry which works like I said with all my adapters (zero etc)  same goes with tv as screen. As to new kernel  I have waited before(other devices) for the latest updates with promises to fix issues and they never came, the dates came and went so many times I nolonger believe they will happen and instead its there just to keep us hanging on in hope etc.. Anyway returning it now on Monday when post office is open

You simply switch to the screen size, which match your (non-standard?) TV ... with the h3disp utility, which is a part of Armbian. There are around 30.000 downloads of Armbian for Opi PC and very little to no complains. Yesterday I tested many screen resolutions and they all works, 4k included. Audio over HDMI works, 3D engine works, video acceleration works - 2k without a problem, 4k some problems but it will be fixed once, ... Onboard wifi works, I don't care for 3rd parties.

If you are using images from Orange Pi site, than yes, those are in terrible shape and probably won't be updated.

It's your choice, what you are going to use.

Tried the utility but does do anything regardless of what settings I used....

I do appreciate the time you have but in to answering my questions but having come from raspberry to orange I had tried most everything to get it to work correctly.... Just never managed to get the Orange Pi PC to function as well as the Raspberries

As to wifi the Pi PC does not have built it wifi so requires a dongle... Just a shame the ones I have don't work(but oddle work fine with raspberries) it may have been a start...

Again thank you for all your help

Another Raspberry Pi zombie
If you want something that works without any effort, just buy an iPhone. (Support is great, I heard.)

These are hacking boards. Not consumer computers.

Goodbye!
P.S. Please, please, don't answer with a RasPi ad, they really don't need it. Its marketing is fantastic! (As we can see with the posts of their fans in other boards forums.)  ;)
