Wow! Great comprehensive reply. Thank you a lot.

Very good idea to show the temperature as well.  ...

Typical expected lifespan of modern CPUs is 20-30 years, so if we intentionaly make it lower (maybe 5-10 years?) for 15$ PC it doesn't really matter.
You are right, the voltage is slightly over the recommended value for 1.536 GHz (1.5V), but I don't think it has negative impact on CPU.
H3 is designed to operate at ambient temperature of -20 to +70 C, and the cpu can run safely at 90 C internal die temperature.
I can assure you that "it makes no difference if a SoC stays at sane temperatures on its own or whether you need advanced heat dissipation techniques (AKA heatsink + fan) to achieve these temperatures".
Running the SoC/CPU with heatsink is more "normal" (and more common) than running it without one.

I will soon upload script.bin versions with more conservative settings, so that everyone can choose the desired (safe/normal/extreme) operating mode.

The problem is

  • We're not talking about "modern CPUs" but instead of dirt-cheap consumer-grade SoCs that contain also a few ARM cores
  • If these SoCs are used in their normal environment ARM processing power doesn't count at all since all relevant stuff happens in different parts of the SoC (2D/3D on GPU, in our case Mali400, video acceleration on the VPU, in our case CedarX)
  • Allwinner announced it's first SoC (A10) just four years ago. No longevity experiences possible
  • Allwinner is only focused on consumer market any more where an achievable lifespan doesn't play any role (which might influence production priorities if you're selling only through lowest price possible)
  • Chip manufacturers that focus on other market segments (industrial applications) do know what influences the lifespan and they also tell their customers
  • It's still not about temperatures but the problem is overvoltage (needed for insane overclocking) which seems to be the case with every single OS image available for H3 based Orange Pis now

TI sums it up: http://www.pandorawiki.org/Power_modes#Operating_Point

Anyway, the whole discussion is useless since now it's clear what leads to the thermal problems and that the H3 behaves nice when treated nice (no overclocking/overvolting). And that's good news at least for me since the Orange Pi PC might be interesting as multi-purpose low-power device to be used for security stuff and home automation. The H3 is not fast but cheap. And fortunately now there exists also a cheap SBC making use of the H3's capabilities to produce really cheap boards (internal 100 Mb/s Ethernet PHY, 4 USB PHYs, no PMIC/PMU needed)

Thx again for your great work, just donated since I will rely on your work when my OPi arrives.

I limited CPU freq to 1200 and DDR freq to 600 and experienced no crashes so far

Today my OPi PC arrived and I had the chance to have a look what's really happening.

Maybe you're the victim of both overclocking and undervolting

Please read from here on:

http://linux-sunxi.org/Orange_Pi_PC#CPU_clock_speed_limit
http://www.orangepi.org/orangepi ... =6967&fromuid=29411

For 1.2 GHz 1320 mV are recommended. I did some tests today just to realize that my settings (trying to avoid overclocking) lead to higher temperatures than compared to the settings all you H3 OPi customers use from the very beginning. Lower temperatures at the same clockspeed are caused by lower consumption caused by lower voltage.

It's obvious that Xunlong's default settings with 2 OPPs in the dvfs table (targeting at overclocking with 1.53 GHz) might lead to undervolting situations when cpufreq decreases (applies especially to 1.2 GHz). Since you seem somewhat experienced it would be a really good idea to give this a try. Install RPi-Monitor and check temperatures. And then adjust script.bin with sane values and check again.

Kodi's stuff has been added to Debian's "Sid" repository, so yea, you should be able to load it with "Apt Get". But, It's better to load it via the ARMHF "packages", the problem still remains, the hardware accelerator is still the major stumbling block.
Lubuntu has the same problem, it can load from the repository, but, you can't manage it's slowness to even react to mouse movement.

Could you guide how to install kodi on Ubuntu from odroid repo?

I treid but failed

I've installed package kodi-odroid from this repo: http://oph.mdrjr.net/meveric/ on Debian Jessie

Can you guide us a little with that? What things you did? Thanks
