LIRC on PC2 with Ubuntu

I have just tried out the Ubuntu desktop image for the PC 2 from the Orangepi website and I want to start using the IR receiver via LIRC.

I have LIRC installed but can't see the IR device that should be at /dev/lirc
And if I run $ irw
And press buttons on a random remote, I see no output on the screen.

Can anyone tell me how to use this?
