They are certainly not smaller. Latest Armbian server image download size is around 200Mb (180-250, depends on the userspace). But the size should not be a deciding factor, even more, is actually better for SD card health. Stock images, which you recommend as an alternative are a security and stability hazard. Not to mention that there are no fixes or utilities in the userspace. They were made from a very old kernel which never received an update. We also still have this 3.4.y kernel, but it contains many fixes. It's also possible to use it - you can download our historic images from archives.
A quick check between real Vanilla images (unchanged upstream kernel sources and plain Debian) and Armbian ... which on top of this provides end user support. |
