Count frequency on GPIO

Hi,
Is possible to count frequency for example I would like to connect a function generator (square wave, 5V) pulses to gpio. (in real world I have temp sensor and salinity sensor which gives frequency on output)
I need to measure frequency from 0 up to 20 kHz. (For now I have  done it on Arduino which is then connected over serial port to OrangePI) but in future I like to avoid Arduino and directly count pulses with orangepi.

Is there some example in C or python on how to measure frequency?

Hi.. its awesome project, but first we mist know gpio which used to recieve external clock/frequency source like digital pin 5 on arduino(t0), may be anyone know about gpio which recieve external click to orange Pi timer
