Screen printing is a popular and versatile printing method that has stood the test of time due to its durability, vibrant results, and adaptability to various surfaces. Also known as silk screening or serigraphy, this technique is widely used in industries ranging from fashion and advertising to electronics and fine art. The roots of screen printing trace back to ancient China and Japan, where artists used silk screens and stencils to transfer designs onto fabric. One of the most notable strengths of screen printing is its ability to produce bold, opaque colors that hold up over time. The process begins with the creation of the screen itself. This involves stretching a fine mesh—traditionally silk but now more commonly polyester—over a rigid frame. A light-sensitive emulsion is then applied to the mesh. Once dried, the screen is exposed to light through a film positive containing the desired design. The light hardens the emulsion where the image is not present, and the unhardened areas are washed away, leaving behind a stencil of the design.
