I also checked 16x2 LCD with I2C board and works ok. However I don't like this display, because it i ...

There is nothing called Openelec support for lcd's except for the underlying bus driver support like i2c and now not even for Kodi.

The support of LCD is directly handled by two separate projects:

1. Lcdproc server project which is currently in zimmer mode with no active releases.

2. The XBMCLcdproc plugin.

For the pcd8544 based Nokia display's here is an old thread which gives some indication of a possible implementation.

I am not sure if ss1306 supports hd44780 commands. If it does then you can use the below implementation for ssd1311 oled device to generate a lcdproc patch.

https://sourceforge.net/p/lcdproc/discussion/312/thread/cc8e5089/

The hd44780 gives good viewing angle if the backlight and intensity is tuned properly.

But then they are slow. So if you some thing which refreshes the display then you need to delay it so that it is readable. The XBMCLCDproc plugin settings allows those tweaks.

Thanks for the clarification. I'd write our own LCD driver as I have a few color TFTs which could look quite nice. But I need to find time at first.
Regarding 16x2 I have "white on blue" version so manipulation with backlight doesn't help a lot. And slowed down scrolling indeed because LCD's content was completely unreadable. Nokia/Philips LCD wouldn't be much better, but at least because of higher resolution we could avoid scrolling longer texts.
